Cotton sateen, cotton percale, cotton gauze: what are the differences?

You can find them on our product sheets but do you know what they mean? Cotton sateen, cotton percale, cotton gauze: these terms are good indicators to choose, with care, your future bed linen. But what do they mean exactly? Let's take stock of these "materials" with various powers.

A QUESTION OF WEAVING

For short, satin, percale and cotton gauze are called "materials". In reality, they are neither materials nor fibers, but different techniques for weaving cotton. Treated in different ways, the fiber delivers new qualities, offering a unique comfort to the sheets.

To better understand the work done and its consequences on the fiber, we need to go a little deeper into the subject and talk about technique. You will see, it will help us for the continuation. Also, what are the specificities of the different weaves?

- Cotton percale: each horizontal thread passes perpendicularly over a vertical thread. This gives a very tight weave that gives the fabric a matte look and a very airy feel.

- Cotton sateen: each thread runs through three threads and then back through the other. This technique gives the fabric a shiny appearance and a silky touch.

- Cotton gauze: two warp threads intertwine around two weft threads. The result? A very airy fabric, slightly embossed, with a great flexibility.

You will have understood, everything is really based - or almost! - on the weave. So before you buy a new bedding set, you'll need to know the characteristics of each and their effects on the sheets.
