How to choose your duvet cover?

You spend one third of your day in your bed, this means you have to be careful when you choose your duvet cover to sleep well. However, it is not easy to choose a duvet cover since you have access to a wide offer with various properties. Essix, home linen specialist, gives you the best tips to choose the duvet cover that will perfectly fit your needs. What are the differences between natural fabric and synthetic fabric? Which size of duvet cover according to the mattress should you choose?

1. SYNTHETIC DUVET OR NATURAL DUVET?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A NATURAL DUVET? ?

Nothing is better than a natural duvet filled with goose or duck feathers for many reasons:

  • - A natural duvet is thermos-regulating: it lets the air circulate freely and clears humidity

  • - A natural duvet has better isothermal properties.

  • - A natural duvet has a shelf-life of 2 to 3 times longer than a synthetic duvet.

  • - A natural duvet is lighter, softer and smoother.

  • - A natural duvet is suitable for allergic persons.

Natural duvet fact:

Contrary to popular thinking, feather and down are not an allergy source. Allergies are mainly caused by dust and mites located in the bedding. These elements don’t stick on natural materials but on synthetic materials producing static electricity. It is advised to often shake your duvet and to wash it once to twice a year to eliminate dust mites.

In a natural duet, the higher is the down percentage, the more isolating, the suppler and the lighter the duvet will be.

Essix offers 2 models of natural duvets:

  • - The premium duvet with 70% of new white duck down and 30% of feather.

  • - The classic duvet with 90% of new white duck down and 10% of feather.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A SYNTHETIC DUVET?

Originally, the synthetic duvet had, as a vocation, to imitate the natural duvet. Nowadays, it compensates the lack of natural products and seduces by its competitive price. There are different types of synthetic fibers available at all prices for synthetic duvets and synthetic pillows. Our high requirements lead us to select the best fibers to fully satisfy you:

  • Ordinary fiber: It is the most basic and so, the cheapest fiber. This fiber has a low insulation property.

  • Hollow fiber: : This fiber has a higher quality than the ordinary fiber. It lets the air circulating (as a pipe), and so, offers a better thermal isolation ability. Indeed, the air is the best insulator of the world.

  • Hollow silicon-coated fiber: this fiber is silicon-coated and so, more slippery. Thus, they don’t clustered in one of the duvet corner but they are spread in the whole duvet. The warmth is better allocated and the duvet is suppler. The goal is to imitate the effect of the puff of the duck or goose down.

  • - Microfiber : microfibers are hollow fibers with a diameter twice smaller which brings to the synthetic fiber has benefits that are close to the natural duvet: Indeed, the smaller the diameter is, the more isolating the duvet will be.

  • - Silicone-coated ball fiber: Ball fibers have even more elasticity than hollow fiber but are less « technical » and so more competitively priced than hollow fiber. In its collections, Essix only us hollow silicon-coated fibers (EDEN, SUMMER, YING AND YANG duvets, NIRVANA, ZEN pillows), silicone-coated ball fibers (Eden pillow) and microfibers (Nirvana duvet).

2. CHOOSING THE SHELL OF YOUR DUVET

THE FABRIC AND ITS FINISHES: :

2 types of fabrics are used for our duvet shells:  145 TC cotton and cotton percale (for duvets with natural filling) and 200 TC cotton percale (for duvets with synthetic filling) . The tight weave of the cotton percale guarantees the impermeability of the cover. It does not let the filling go through it. It also creates a natural barrier for dust mites.

These covers can be associated to many types of finishes: the printed bias or the piping and the double stitch for a greater strength

THE STITCHING:

The way the filling is placed and hold on plays a main role in the duvet cover performance.

We have selected 2 stitching types for our duvets:

  • - The wave stitching, allowing to stabilize the filling with 2 bands on all the duvet. This way, the filling can stay evenly spread out.

  • - The square stitching, containing the filling and avoid it to move in the duvet. This stitching guarantees an absolute strength.

3. CHOOSING YOUR DUVET ACCORDING TO THE SEASON

The duvet need to be adapted to the room temperature. Thus, the natural duvets and microfiber duvets are more adapted to cold seasons. The fabric and the weight are important features to take into consideration when you choose your duvet.

The weight changes according to the type of filling. Indeed, natural duvets are lighter than synthetic duvets. A natural duvet is adapted to winter season from 250g/m² whereas a microfiber duvet is adapted to this season from 400g/m². During summer, you will prefer to use a polyester duvet with a 500g/m² weight.

4. NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR YOUR DUVET

Because the respect for nature is highly important for us, we have developed products that are the least harmful for the environment.

Our natural duvets are strictly treated: The sorting, the washing and the high temperature sterilization guarantee a maximal hygiene for our duvets. Other treatments can be applied on our synthetic duvets.

Anti-dust mites treated duvets: 100% natural treatment with extract of essential oils (lemon, lavender, eucalyptus), staying efficient even after repeated washing cycles.

Teflon anti-stain treatment duvets: This treatment allows to keep the new aspect the duvet longer, protects it from stains and make the cleaning easier.

5. CHOOSING THE RIGHT DUVET SIZE

It is important to choose the right size for your duvet. Ideally, the duvet should overrun of 20 to 30 cm on each bed side, to avoid the cold air to come. This way you can stay warmly wrapped up all night without a risk to be uncovered.
